Reward history modulates perceptual load effects

چکیده

The reward history of a stimulus can yield strong attentional selection biases. Indeed, capture be triggered by previously rewarded items which are neither salient nor relevant for the ongoing task, even when is clearly counter-productive to actually obtain outcome. Therefore, value-driven (VDAC) has been argued an automatic attention mechanism. Our study aimed at putting VDAC automaticity directly test. For this purpose, Load Theory offers comprehensive framework where distraction observed under low but not high perceptual load condition. Nevertheless, if indeed automatic, reward-stimuli should on both conditions. We used feature vs. conjunction discrimination go/no-go cue manipulate load. As expected, our results revealed that decreased interference produced low-reward distractor. However, effect was significant high-reward distractor, giving support automaticity. discussed in light literature and we strongly encourage consider along with determining capture.

Musical expertise modulates the effects of visual perceptual load.

Several studies have demonstrated that faces are processed differently from other types of objects, implicating a special role that faces have within the human visual system. However, other studies have suggested that faces may be special only in that they constitute a highly familiar category of visual objects with which most humans have expertise. In this study, we tested a group of expert mu...

Perceptual load modulates conscious flicker perception.

Subjective visual experience depends not only on the spatial arrangement of the environment, but also on the temporal pattern of stimulation. For example, flickering and steady light presented in the same location evoke a very different perceptual experience due to their different temporal patterns. Here, we examined whether the availability of processing resources affected the temporal resolut...

Perceptual load modulates object-based attention.

Two experimental series are reported using both reaction time (RT) and a data-limited perceptual report to examine the effects of perceptual load on object-based attention. Perceptual load was manipulated across 3 levels by increasing the complexity of perceptual judgments. Data from the RT-based experiments showed object-based effects when the target was near the cued location. Results from th...

Monetary Reward Modulates Task-Irrelevant Perceptual Learning for Invisible Stimuli

Task Irrelevant Perceptual Learning (TIPL) shows that the brain's discriminative capacity can improve also for invisible and unattended visual stimuli. It has been hypothesized that this form of "unconscious" neural plasticity is mediated by an endogenous reward mechanism triggered by the correct task performance. Although this result has challenged the mandatory role of attention in perceptual...

Perceptual Load Modulates Visual Cortex Excitability to Magnetic Stimulation

Much recent research has shown that the level of perceptual load in a task determines the perception of task-irrelevant stimuli and associated neural activity, but the mediating neural mechanisms remain unclear. Here we show that increasing the level of perceptual load in a static letter search task results in an increase in the intensity of transcranial magnetic stimulation over V5/MT required...
